Summer Pick: I Really Like Slop!
by Mo Willems, Hyperion Books for Children
What's it about?
Gerald and Piggie are best friends, and they do everything together as all best friends do! But, that doesn't mean that they always like the same things. In this episode, Piggie offers Gerald her favorite food - slop, and expects Gerald to try it and like it, too. Will Gerald try Piggie's slop? Will slop become Gerald's favorite food, too?
Why do we love it?
This is a perfect summer book for traveling families with toddlers and pre-schoolers. This book is about so much more than trying new food. It is about learning to step out of your comfort zone, respecting different cultures, acknowledging friends' excitements and emotions, and responding to them appropriately. And, as all the Elephant and Piggie books are, this story is so funny and heart-warming. What we love about the book is the unexpected ending (spoiler alert: Gerald REALLY didn't like slop) - this clever, relatable, and realistic ending makes I Really Like Slop such a great book to read along with Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss.
So, if you are taking kids on a family road trip, or flying to an exotic foreign land, don't forget to pack this book in your suitcase!
We want more:
From an animated series and kids' podcast to expanded toy lines (puppets, figurines, and playsets, please?) and apparel for kids and parents - our wishlist for the Elephant and Piggie books is long!
Meanwhile, check out Elephant and Piggie: We Are in a Play, and this video of Mo cooking up Piggie's favorite slop.
Thanks for checking in with us, and stay tuned for more Doobry Summer Pick all throughout this summer!
